Heidi Hoefer, DVM, Diplomate ABVP

Dr. Hoefer has been taking care of birds and exotic pets since 1987. After graduating from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987, she did a small animal medicine and surgery internship followed by a residency program in exotic pet medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in NYC. She was appointed a staff position in the Department of Avian and Exotic Pets at AMC where she worked for 10 years treating patients and training interns and residents. Dr. Hoefer then moved to private exotics practice in Long Island in 1997. After another 10 years working exotics out of a local pet hospital, she decided it was time to open Long Island’s first and only all-exotic animal hospital, Island Exotic Veterinary Care, in 2007.  Dr. Hoefer has been caring for just exotic pets for over 29 years.

Dr.Hoefer received ABVP board certification in avian practice in 1993, the first time the specialty certification was available.  She is an avid national and international veterinary lecturer on exotic pet topics, and enjoys publishing in books, journals, and conference proceedings. Her most recent manuscript was published in 2013 in the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery (gastrointestinal foreign bodies in an umbrella cockatoo).

Dr. Hoefer lives here on Long island with 1 husband, 3 kids, and the extended pet family of 4 parrotlets, 3 parrots,  2 rats, and 2 dogs and cat.

Meredith Davis, DVM, MS

2014-04-12 11.31.53

Dr. Davis grew up on Long Island, New York and completed her college years in upstate New York. After graduating from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, she continued her schooling at Cornell University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Davis graduated with her veterinary degree in 2000 and then moved to the Midwest to complete a residency in Poultry Medicine and a Master of Science in Veterinary Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University. After completion of the graduate degree in 2002, an opportunity arose in Northern Virginia to work in a large avian/exotic practice.

Dr. Davis has spent the last 12 years in Virginia working as an avian/exotic veterinarian while raising her growing family. In 2014, a job opportunity opened up for her husband on Long Island and the family returned to the area. Dr. Davis joined IEVC in March of 2014 and is excited to continue practicing in the field of avian/exotic medicine which has always been her passion.

Stephany Lewis, DVM

Dr. Lewis joined our team in August 2017 and is participating in an ABVP Avian Specialty Residency program at IEVC. Dr. Lewis received her BA in Biology in 2010 from the University of Pennsylvania (graduating Magna Cum Laude!) and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tufts University in 2015, where she was a member of the Veterinary Honor Society, Phi Zeta.  Dr. Lewis’s post-graduate studies include a one year small animal internship at the University of Michigan in 2016 and an Avian/Wildlife Medicine and Surgery Internship at the Tufts Wildlife Clinic in Massachusetts from 2016-2017.  Dr. Lewis received the Zoologic Companion Animal Medicine Award from Tufts in 2015, where she excelled in the care of small exotic companion mammals (think rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and more!).  Dr. Lewis is working towards her Avian Specialty Boards at Island Exotics and we couldn’t be more proud of her hard work and dedication to all exotic and domestic avian species.  Dr. Lewis particularly enjoys orthopedic surgery in birds, performing fracture repairs on both pet birds and wildlife.

Welcome Dr. Lewis!!

Nina Trischitta

Nina

Nina is our receptionist and in-house ferret guru. She worked for Estee Lauder Cosmetics for over 24 years before joining our team at Island Exotics.  In 1986 she met her first ferret and soon realized there was a need for education and rescue for these sweet pets. In 1997, along with fellow ferret lovers, she started AFC Ferret Club and Rescue. Over the years AFC has made a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of ferrets in our area.

In 2001 Nina left the corporate world to follow her heart. She started a pet sitting service and concentrated on ferret rescue, at one time sharing her home with 24 fuzzies! Nina found her way to Island Exotics through her love of ferrets and has been with us since 2009. She currently shares her home with 9 ferrets and a rescued goldfish. Nina enjoys traveling but her ferrets and love of Long Island’s parks and beaches keeps her close to home.
